What this means
- BMI is a population screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, so muscular people are routinely misclassified as overweight.
- Waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio predict metabolic risk better than BMI for most individuals. A waist under half your height is the simplest useful check.
How the bmi calculation works
Body mass index is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. It was designed in the 1830s to describe populations, and it does that job well — across large groups, higher BMI correlates with higher rates of cardiovascular and metabolic disease.
Where it fails is at the individual level. BMI cannot see body composition, fat distribution, bone density, or ethnicity-specific risk thresholds. A 200-pound athlete at 10% body fat and a 200-pound sedentary person of the same height get the same score and very different health outcomes.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI?
18.5 to 24.9 for adults under standard WHO categories. Several health bodies use a lower overweight threshold of 23 for people of South Asian descent because metabolic risk appears at a lower BMI.
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
No. Muscle is denser than fat, so lean, muscular people frequently land in the overweight or obese categories despite low body fat. Use a body fat estimate or waist-to-height ratio instead.
