How the final grade calculation works
The calculation behind this is simple weighted averaging, but it is worth understanding rather than just reading off, because it tells you something useful about where your effort should go. Your overall grade is the current grade multiplied by everything that is not the final, plus the exam score multiplied by the final's weight. Rearranging to solve for the exam score gives the number you need.
The exam weight is what determines how much any of this matters. A final worth fifteen percent simply cannot move your grade far — even the difference between a perfect score and a mediocre one is a few points overall. A final worth forty percent is a different situation entirely, capable of moving you two letter grades in either direction. Reading the syllabus for that single number tells you more about how hard to study than any amount of anxiety will.
Two results are worth checking for specifically. Sometimes the required score exceeds one hundred percent, meaning your target is already mathematically out of reach and you should redirect effort to a realistic grade or another course. Sometimes it is at or below zero, meaning the grade is secured regardless of what happens. Both are common near the end of term and both are useful to know before deciding how to allocate a finite amount of revision time.

What do I need on my final to get an A?
Subtract your current grade multiplied by the non-final portion from your target, then divide by the final's weight. If your current grade is 82% with a 30% final and you want 90%, you need 108.7% — which means an A is no longer possible.
Can I still pass if I fail the final?
It depends on the weight. Multiply your current grade by one minus the final's weight to see the worst case. Note that some courses require a minimum exam score to pass regardless of the overall average, so check the syllabus.
How much can the final actually change my grade?
At most, the exam weight in percentage points. A final worth thirty percent can move your overall grade by up to thirty points between a zero and a perfect score, though realistically the swing is far smaller.
Does this account for curves or dropped grades?
No. It assumes a straight weighted average. If your instructor curves the exam, drops your lowest score, or offers extra credit, the real requirement will be lower than the number shown here.
