What this means
- You will have roughly 7.0 ft² left over. Keep at least one full box for future repairs — dye lots and product lines change constantly.
- Order everything at once and check that all boxes share the same lot number. Mixing lots produces visible colour and gloss differences.
- Rooms with many corners, closets, or angled walls need more waste allowance than a simple rectangle.
How the flooring calculation works
Flooring is sold by the box, and boxes come in awkward coverage amounts, so the real question is always how many boxes rather than how many square feet. Take the room area, add waste for cuts, divide by coverage per box, and round up.
Waste percentage depends on layout more than skill. A straight lay in a rectangular room wastes about 10%; diagonal installations waste 15%; herringbone and chevron patterns waste 20% or more because every board needs an angled cut at both ends of a run.
Frequently asked questions
How much extra flooring should I buy?
Ten percent for a straight installation in a simple room, fifteen for diagonal or a complex layout, twenty for herringbone. Always keep a spare box after the job.
Do I need underlayment?
Floating floors like laminate and click-lock vinyl generally require it for sound and moisture control, unless the product has it pre-attached. Glue-down and nail-down installations usually do not.
