What this means
- Waking at the end of a cycle, in light sleep, tends to feel much better than being pulled out of deep sleep midway through — even when the total is shorter. That is the whole idea behind cycle-aligned timing.
- Cycle length is not fixed at ninety minutes. It varies between people and lengthens across the night, so treat 90 minutes as an average rather than a metronome. Total sleep still matters more than alignment.
- Most adults need seven to nine hours. Five cycles at ninety minutes is seven and a half, which is a reasonable floor for regular nights; four cycles is a short night, not a target.
How the sleep calculation works
Sleep is not uniform. Across a night you move through repeating cycles of light sleep, deep slow-wave sleep and REM, each taking roughly ninety minutes. How you feel on waking depends heavily on which stage you were in when the alarm went off. Being woken during deep sleep produces sleep inertia — that heavy, disoriented grogginess that can take half an hour to shake — whereas waking naturally at the end of a cycle, in light sleep, feels far cleaner.
That is what this calculator times. Rather than picking a round number of hours, it works in whole cycles and adds an allowance for the time it takes you to actually fall asleep, which is the step most people forget. Setting an alarm eight hours after getting into bed is not eight hours of sleep; if you take twenty minutes to drop off it is nearer seven and a half, and it may land you mid-cycle.
The ninety-minute figure is an average and should be treated as one. Individual cycles range from around seventy to one hundred and twenty minutes, and they lengthen as the night goes on, with more REM in later cycles. This means the alignment gets less precise the further out you project. It also means total sleep duration remains the more important variable — six aligned cycles beats five aligned cycles, and no amount of clever timing compensates for chronic short sleep.

Is it better to get 6 hours of aligned sleep or 7 hours of unaligned sleep?
Seven hours, in almost every case. Cycle alignment affects how you feel in the first half hour after waking; total sleep affects cognition, mood and health over the whole day. Use alignment to fine-tune a good night, not to justify a short one.
Why does the calculator add time for falling asleep?
Because bedtime and sleep onset are not the same moment. A healthy adult typically takes ten to twenty minutes to fall asleep, and ignoring that offsets every cycle boundary. If you regularly take more than thirty minutes, that is worth looking into on its own.
How many hours of sleep do I actually need?
Seven to nine hours for most adults, with teenagers needing more and genuine short sleepers being rare despite how many people believe they are one. If you need an alarm to wake and feel sleepy during the day, you are probably not getting enough.
