What this means

  • Retirement contributions are not lost money — they are still yours. Your true spendable income is take-home pay, but your total compensation includes those contributions plus any employer match.
  • Social Security tax stops at the wage base. High earners see their paycheck jump partway through the year once that ceiling is reached.
  • This uses 2025 federal brackets and the standard deduction. Itemized deductions, credits, multiple jobs, and W-4 adjustments will change your actual withholding.

How the take-home pay calculation works

Take-home pay is gross salary minus pre-tax deductions, minus federal, FICA, state and local taxes, minus any after-tax deductions. The order matters: pre-tax retirement and benefit contributions reduce the income that federal and state tax are calculated on.

One nuance most calculators get wrong: Section 125 benefits like health premiums and HSA contributions reduce wages for FICA as well as income tax, but 401(k) contributions only reduce income tax — Social Security and Medicare are still owed on them.

Frequently asked questions

How much of my paycheck goes to taxes?

For a typical middle-income earner in a state with income tax, roughly 25-32% of gross goes to federal, FICA, and state taxes combined. The effective rate is well below the marginal bracket.

Does a 401(k) contribution reduce my taxes?

Traditional contributions reduce federal and state taxable income but not Social Security or Medicare tax. Roth contributions reduce neither — they are made from after-tax pay.
