What this means
- Conversion factors here are exact definitions rather than rounded approximations — an inch is exactly 25.4 millimetres and a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms.
- Pick the same category in both dropdowns — you cannot convert a length into a weight.
How the unit converter calculation works
Unit conversion is multiplication by a constant, and the only real difficulty is knowing whether that constant is exact or approximate. Most of the factors here are exact by international definition: an inch is precisely 25.4 millimetres, a pound is precisely 0.45359237 kilograms, and a mile is precisely 1609.344 metres. Those definitions were fixed by agreement in the twentieth century, which is why conversions between metric and imperial can be done without loss.
The exception worth watching is data storage, where two competing conventions coexist. Manufacturers use decimal prefixes where a gigabyte is a thousand million bytes, while most operating systems report in binary where a gibibyte is 1,073,741,824. The two diverge by about seven percent at gigabyte scale and nearly ten percent at terabyte scale, which is the entire explanation for why a new drive appears smaller than advertised.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my hard drive show less space than advertised?
Because the manufacturer counts a terabyte as a trillion bytes while your operating system divides by 1024 three times and reports tebibytes. A 1 TB drive is genuinely a trillion bytes, which works out to about 0.909 TiB. Nothing is missing; the two are just measuring with different rulers.
Are US and imperial measurements the same?
For length and weight, effectively yes. For volume, no — an imperial pint is about twenty percent larger than a US pint, and imperial gallons and fluid ounces differ too. This converter uses US customary volumes, which matters a great deal when following a recipe from the wrong side of the Atlantic.
Why can I not convert weight into volume?
Because the relationship depends on what the substance is. A litre of water weighs a kilogram, but a litre of honey weighs about 1.4 kilograms and a litre of flour around 0.6. Converting between the two requires a density figure, which is why cooking conversions are handled separately.
